PRAISE BE

When I worked at a fast food restaurant, I did a social experiment.
One day, I asked “do you want a girl toy or a boy toy?” No one went against gender roles.
The next day, it was “do you want a doll toy or a car toy?” Boys got dolls. Girls got cars.
Vocabulary is important.

Any time someone tells you that men or women should behave a certain way because -~~*NATURE*~~-

Also whenever people pick out examples from “nature” to show how current human gender roles/stereotypes in our society are “natural”, they conveniently ignore animals like Penguins where the males take care of the eggs as a group where the females go into the sea to hunt food and replenish their body fat and energy stores that were depleted because of the strain of pregnancy.  Then afterwards they take turns take care of the chick and going out to hunt.  Nobody points to that as a way society could work (paternity leave in order to help take the burden of child rearing off the mother who has to recover, allowing couples to split time from work and staying home), even though that’s “natural” too.  Nope, “nature” only counts as “natural” and the “way things are” when it’s an example that supports the current status quo and stereotypes that enforce that status quo.  And we can’t learn anything from the way other species handle things either.

In one experiment, mothers were asked to guess the steepness of a carpeted slope that their 11-month olds would be able to crawl. Then the children actually crawled the slope, and the difference between actual and mother-predicted angles was noted.

The results showed that both boys and girls were able to crawl the same degree of incline. However, the predictions of the mothers were correct within one degree for the boys and underestimated their daughter’s ability by nine degrees.

What this shows is that the presumption that boys are more physical causes parents to encourage their boys more in physical activities while cautioning their girls. This further translates into providing more opportunities for boys to be physical and fewer for girls. The result?

Boys actually do develop stronger physical skills than girls. But not because of anything innate or biological, but rather because of the gender roles that the parents subconsciously projected onto their babies.
